Tingim Laip Project, PNG
Tingim Laip is Papua New Guinea's largest peer-led HIV prevention and care project. It operates in 20 locations across 10 provinces. Tingim Laip is a project of the PNG National AIDS Council, managed by Cardno Emerging Markets and funded by DFAT Australian Aid.
The project connects the people from populations most affected by HIV in Papua New Guinea with information about HIV prevention, with condoms, and with access to HIV testing and couselling, STI diagnosis and treatment, sexual and reproductive health and HIV treatment and care services. In PNG, these populations include sex workers and other women who trade sex, their partners and clients, mobile men with money, men who have sex with men, people living with HIV and transgender people. Tingim Laip employs Field Officers from these popualtionsto connect people with information and services through outreach and accompanied referrals.
Tingim Laip is a five-year project with annual funding of AU$5m. APMG has been the lead technical partner on the project and has assisted the national team to increase the focus on Key Populations. We have managed a pool of short-term technical advisers who have provided assistance in many areas including: volunteer recognition policies and practices; development of basic HIV and peer education training curricula; interventions for alcohol harm reduction; design and rollout of a Unique Identified Code system for tracking patterns of service use; and options for financial sustainability.
APMG Director Lou McCallum is Project Director and Contractor Representative, managing Cardno's relationship with DFAT for the project.
